Objective: The effects of task-oriented training and muscles strengthening training on cervical cord injury patients¡¯ upper extremity performance skills and daily living activities.
Method: The study included 28 cervical spinal cord injury patients who were treated at S Hospital. They were divided into two groups of 14 patients each and applied with task-oriented training and muscles strengthening training respectively for 30 minutes per time, five times per week for six weeks. Wilcoxon¡¯s test were conducted to compare VLT-SV, CUE and SCIM¥± scores between before and after the experiment and Mann-whitney u test were conducted to compared differences in the amounts of changes between the two groups.
Results: In the comparison within each group, both groups showed significant differences in the results of assessment of VLT-SV, CUE and SCIM¥±(p<.05). In the comparison between the two groups, CUE scales showed significant differences(p<.05). SCIM¥±¡¯s item of self-care showed significant correlations with the item of the use of the right upper extremity of CUE and VLT-SV(p<.05).
Conclusion: The results indicated that task-oriented training and muscles strengthening training are efficient for cervical spinal cord injury patients¡¯ upper extremity functions and daily living activities and that in task-oriented training, the subjects¡¯ satisfaction with the use of their upper extremities were high.
